I’ve had a difficult week with my students, détails prohibited but suffice to say your post is very relevant and as such a breath of fresh air... This is what I wrote on my Instagram post last night...
In the end…
It doesn’t matter, nothing does but kindness, honesty and love.. and ‘becoming’ together as a whole, not a part…
Does that make sense to you..?
“the worst thing,” he told me,
“is bitterness, people end up so
bitter.”
― Charles Bukowski
It seems to me many, including the very young sadly, are always looking for more when what they have is already beautiful. So thank you for these very wise words..
Been overwhelmed with lots of things in the last few days (some "numbers” related!) so this was a much-welcome read. Bombarded by social media and feeling like I’m being pulled in a million directions at once at present. Pressure is for tyres!! I love that and will use it! Thanks for the post Barrie 😊
You have a lot on your plate, Roy, with the upcoming trip. However much you are looking forward to that 'ride' the logistics of it and the need to tie together your approach and Hannah's means some 'numbers need to add up'! Look after yourself!
Lordy, so much information at our fingertips (through phones, watches, mini computers...)- no wonder we are all overwhelmed with it all. I', so glad you wrote about your "joy" ride instead of the numbers - thank you for that, it was much more calming to read.
It is too easy to obsess about the wrong things. Nowadays I am focussing on important things. Value, not price. Time spent together, the feel of the sun, the aesthetics. The numbers stack up all by themselves. But collecting memories feels so much more important. Thanks for reading, Debs
Great share Barrie - history is full of books, plays, films etc that ‘didn’t make the numbers’ but are now seen as classics. Although I suspect I don't fit the Substack norm. I don't seek revenue or a large retinue of followers. That's not to say I don't take pleasure and satisfaction that others find some interest in my weekly offerings. I like to think my ego is small, but it's there. I'm not going to deny that. I spent over forty years in business chasing the numbers. It’s good these days I can sit back and just watch them run off into the distance...
I too am a late adopter of ‘laissez faire’ whatever the French is for that. Learning to think more gently and, hopefully, nudge a few folk to an earlier realisation than my own. So much less pressure that way. And, as JoJo’s mum says, pressure is for tyres! Thanks for peeking in.
That sounds like such an important place to reach ... feeling comfortable with what you write and when you write it feels like the ultimate freedom, Kimberley. And so good to find your community too among the creators here.
I'm writing down the Golden Rules (including number 6). 💛
I always love a "there are no rules" rule!

Hoping you are well into apéro, Susie ... sounds like a tricksy week ... so glad our musings found you at the right moment. Sending hugs from us
Thank you for the reminder!
Thank you so much for reading, Priya.
When the 'tyre pressure' is too high, it makes for a bumpy ride, not to mention a possible blow out. Trying to avoid that!
haha, excellent continuation of the analogy ... letting a little air out the tyres always helps us keep a better grip on things!
Hear hear. It's not about numbers. It's about discovering interesting people. Fortunately I've found people like you which is all I want.
PS Love the line "I should point out that ‘irritating’ turns to ‘irritated’ if you deviate from the prescribed route..."
Echoing that right back at you, Andrew, thank you. And, if the truth be told, I had a wee smile to myself when those words popped out in that order!

Enjoying the ride immensely with Encourage Meant. Always a joy to hear the latest... keep pedaling.
That is such a lovely thing to say, Glenn. Much appreciated!
