Let’s Have a Lively Debate
There was a fictional talk show host on UK television back in the day. Mrs Merton was a character created by the hugely talented - and much-missed - Caroline Aherne. The comedy persona she inhabited for her chatshow allowed her to reach the level of outrageousness required to burst the pomposity of a conveyer belt of minor celebrities and politicians who were too full of themselves to see that they were the butt of their own joke.
Anyway, as Mrs Merton used to say:
“Let’s have a lively debate”
The question of the day is:
How much ‘self-promotion’ is too much?
It seems like the $64,000 dollar question (smaller revenues are available!).
We’ve lived through this as smaller business owners and we’ve talked to a lot of people about it in our post-coffee shop days as encouragers.
Our mantra is simple and you are welcome to put it in your quote pipe:
It is 'social' media not 'sales media'
So, we spend our time building connections by talking about other folks’ stuff not our own. I know, right? Counterintuitive but true.
We call it our ‘80/20’ rule … we spend 80% of our time sharing, commenting, celebrating, asking questions about, and thinking about other people’s content … oh, and only 20% on ours. Not in a shouty, ‘me, me, me’ kind of way either.
Gently does it … if you make connections with folk they will be curious what you do. They might ask. Or they’ll slip off and have a peek at the ‘About’ page that tells them if your stuff is for them. If it isn’t, that’s okay.
This is me all the way. It was Pearry Teo (script, director of The Gene Generation and more) who instilled it in me. He said, you gotta share. And I started right that day, and haven't looked back. It's been probably 15 years since he posted it.
I love this principle ❤️
